58 Mile Sock

The 58 Mile Sock takes its name from the distance the fibre travels from recycled fibre to finished sock: 58 miles from spinning in Yorkshire to knitting in Derbyshire.

It is a lightweight crew-length sock with a leg height of approximately 7 inches above the ankle. Compared with the 21 Mile Sock, it has a slightly taller leg and a lighter overall construction, designed for lower-bulk everyday use across a wide range of conditions.

The sock is constructed using a single jersey knit through both the leg and the foot, creating a smooth, flexible structure with a relatively clean profile inside footwear. This construction keeps the sock light and reduces bulk, making it well suited to everyday shoes, office wear and more refined use.

2×2 rib cuff provides hold at the top of the leg. The sock also uses a high heel construction for improved shaping around the rear foot, together with added reinforcement yarn in the heel and toe to improve durability in high-wear areas.

Each pair weighs approximately 50g.

21 Mile Sock

The 21 Mile Sock takes its name from the distance the fibre travels from recycled fibre to finished sock: 21 miles, with both spinning and knitting carried out in Yorkshire.

It is a heavier, more structured crew-length sock with a leg height of approximately 6 inches above the ankle. Compared with the 58 Mile Sock, it is built with a denser and more robust construction for everyday active use, walking and colder conditions.

The leg and top of foot are knitted in a 3×1 rib structure, which provides stretch, hold and a more structured fit around the leg and instep. This ribbed construction also helps the sock adapt well inside boots and trainers, while relieving pressure over the top of the foot.

The underfoot is knitted in single jersey, reducing unnecessary bulk beneath the foot and helping the sock sit more securely inside footwear over longer periods of wear.

Each pair weighs approximately 85g.

Undyed yarn

All Shoddysocks yarns are undyed. Colour is created through fibre selection rather than through a conventional dyeing process.

Recovered fibres are sourced in specific shades and then blended together before spinning, in much the same way colours are mixed on a painter’s palette. By combining different fibres in carefully chosen proportions, the final yarn shade is built into the material itself rather than applied afterwards.

This approach allows colour to be created without an additional dyeing stage, while making use of recovered wool and cashmere fibres already in circulation within the textile system.
